Cork Swansea Ferry
Sad news that the Fastnet Line has been granted permission to enter Examinership. Sign of the difficult times really, hopefull in the spring a service can be resumed as I understand all sides are working hard towards a rescue package. All three councils have invested your money into the project of the Cork Swansea ferry for very good reason that it brings visitors here and provides employment, however fuel costs and the lack of spending power of the people mitigated against its viability. This is the Press Release issued by Council
The three Councils, Cork City, Cork County and Kerry County Councils note the announcement that the Fastnet Line has been granted permission to enter Examinership.
The examinership period will enable the Company to restructure its finances with a view to continuing the service in 2012 and future years.
To date, the three councils have invested €700,000 in the service as it is seen as a critical access route for the region and has carried over 150,000 passengers since it was first launched. The service makes an important economic contribution in terms of tourism and trade generally to the region.
The Councils have agreed to provide €150,000 co-funding for the period of examinership and we look forward to engaging with the Examiner during the examinership period.
